New Players, Best Perspective
General Questions + Calls
What's all this about, then?
Huck + Monster is a Table-to-Field strategy game, based on the sport of Ultimate (Frisbee). Huck + Monster is designed to be durable, travel-ready, and easily played on the sidelines of weekend Ultimate tournaments, while also offering the complexity of a mini, tabletop role playing game.
This looks new. Is it new?
Yes.
As such, we're still working out website bugs, game dynamics, and all sorts of details that may impact the overall experience. We appreciate your patience as we work through our game launch and through the first season.
If you have feedback, or encounter a question, please visit our contact page to participate in our Playtester Survey. If you'd like to join the community discussion, visit the Huck + Monster Discord chat group to drop a line directly to the game creators.
How does it work?
Huck + Monster gameplay is inspired by the rules and regulations of Ultimate Frisbee.
The offense team moves players around the field to give them the best opportunity to "Throw" and "Catch" the game disc to complete plays. The defense team moves players around the field to give them the best chance to "Mark", "Intercept", or "Challenge" the game disc as it is passed.
Successful defensive actions result in a turnover, at which time the defensive team takes control of the game disc, becoming the new offensive team.
Complete catches in the opponent's end zone to score 3 times to win a short game, or 7 times to win a long game.
Visit the Gameplay section for additional details regarding game play.
Do I need to know how to play Ultimate to play this game?
Heck no. You do not need previous Ultimate experience to play Huck + Monster.
Huck + Monster is based on Ultimate Frisbee rules and regulations, which themselves may vary from league-to-league. Because Huck + Monster rules are specifically designed for Pickup Gamekits, it is not necessary to be familiar with standard Ultimate game play to enjoy Huck + Monster.
It is our hope that new Huck + Monster players will be introduced to the sport of Ultimate through our game, and that Ultimate will continue to grow as a result of our humble addition to the space.
Can this game really be played on the Ultimate sideline?
Yes. Huck + Monster can be played on any mostly flat surface. Huck + Monster also offers certain upgrades to ensure that alternate game fields have a solid backing (via laptop).
However:
Huck + Monster team player pieces are 20mm x 28mm in size, and should be categorized as "Easily Lost". To counteract this likelihood, we've included extra players in each Team Bag, as well as replacement minikits as upgrades for lost, or stolen pieces.
Limited Edition Pickup Gamekits are designed to minimize the need for dice wherever possible, making them more field-ready than the typical Starting 7 Gamekit.
Why are there different game guides?
Each Huck + Monster game guide is specifically designed for use under different environmental circumstances. Although game guides may differ in presentation, or level of detail, each contains the same fundamental set of instructions for game play.
Printed:
The super-slim Pickup Gameplay Guide includes the abridged Pickup Game instructions for quick reference on-field. Designed to roll into the Pickup Game Bag for travel games, the Pickup Gameplay Guide instructions are limited to core rules and regulations, which have been streamlined, for quick reference.
The Gameplay Field Manual is also included in all Pickup Gamekits, and is intended to be the common tabletop rule set for use across all Huck + Monster fields. The Field Manual includes the printed version of core game play, but also includes expanded gameplay details and mini-diagrams for official away-game reference.
Online:
The Visual Gameplay Guide is a quick-and-easy way to scan some fun diagrams, click around to answer a few questions, and easily understand the most commonly discussed aspects of the game.
The Regulation Gameplay Guide includes the comprehensive list of all Huck + Monster rules and regulations, and should be considered the official source for official tournament game play for serious competitors.
I hate dice, does this game use dice?
Yes, Huck + Monster does include dice.
For some of our international gamers (we're looking at you, European Union), dice may not be the ideal game mechanic to play Huck + Monster. We totally get it.
We are currently working on two alternative game versions that do not include dice as a game mechanic. Please join the Sideline Team to keep up-to-date on game progress, and early release strategy options.
In the short term:
We are happy to offer Playmaker Pin alternatives with our V2.1 Pickup Gamekits. They are not perfect, but they are a super legit, highly durable, strategy workaround for those strategy gamers who absolutely cannot stand dice.

Game Questions
Please refer to the Regulation Game Guide for an extensive explanation of all game rules, strategy guidelines, expansion Minikits, or advanced game play mechanics.
What is a Huck?
A "Huck" is a very long throw, often resulting in either great success when caught by a skilled receiver, or terrible ruin (turnovers) when defensive bids are successful.
The Huck most commonly occurs when the Handler is unguarded, creating an opportunity for a long distance throw to receivers cutting toward the opponent's end zone.
What is a Monster?
A "Monster" is a very talented defensive player, most often found in their native habitat in the back of the offensive field. A critical part of any defensive team, the Monster focuses on preventing long throws to the end zone. Monsters are most commonly know for their ability to cover the last 30% of the game field with fast strides, long arms, and towering vertical leaps.
What is an Up Call?
During live Ultimate game play, the defensive team will often yell "UP" when the disc is thrown by the offensive team. Teammates on the sideline yell in unison, to alert downfield defenders that the game disc is on the way to an offensive receiver.
In Huck + Monster, the Up Call is the game play process that moves the disc between team players.
The Up Call starts with an offensive throw, and ends with a successful catch, or defensive turnover. The Up Call begins every standard game cycle for moving the disc; after which, teams roll to reposition team players before starting the next Up Call.
Read the full list of Up Call game guides on our Gameplay page.
What is a Bid?
In Ultimate, a "bid" is when a player from either team makes a play to take control of the game disc, often in the form of a "Layout".*
In Huck + Monster, the term "Bid" is limited to descriptions of defensive player actions, for clarity. A "Bid" is a defensive action, taken to gain control of the game disc. Bids include Marks, Intercepts, or Challenges. When reading the Gameplay Guidelines, remember that "Bids" are defense only.
*Certain online Ultimate glossaries also define the term "Bid" as the same thing as a "Layout" in live Ultimate play. The Handler from Huck + Monster remembers a time when "Bid" and "Layout" were two different things, so we're going with the clear distinction.
What is a Handler?
In Huck + Monster, the Handler is the on-field player currently in control of the game disc. Handlers roll 3 dice to determine Throw distance.
The Handler is most commonly the player which is most skilled at throwing the disc. The Handler is often found at the top of the stack, or cutting behind other handlers to offer an open "dump pass" for play safety.
What is a Continue?
In Huck + Monster, the Continue is any player that is unguarded who catches the disc, and then re-throws, without moving teams. Continues may add the total of 1 dice roll to the incoming Throw count.
What is a Receiver?
In Huck + Monster, the Receiver is the intended target of any team Throw. Receivers are often guarded, and must roll 3 dice to catch the disc when defensive players are nearby.
Receivers only roll a single set of 3 dice per Catch, and do not re-roll against different defenders bidding on the disc.
What is a Mark?
In Huck + Monster, the Mark is the defensive player guarding the game disc when it is Thrown by the Handler, or Caught by the Receiver.
Marks roll 3 dice to bid against the throw roll count.
Only one Mark is allowed to bid against the Handler per Throw. No limit is placed on Marks who guard the Receiver on Catch, with each rolling independently to bid.
When Marking the catch, the player must be next to the game disc when it is also next to an offensive player to qualify to roll 3 team dice. If the player is next to the game disc, but the game disc is not next to an offensive player, then the defensive player is not a Mark.
What is an Intercept?
In Huck + Monster, the Intercept is the defensive player adjacent to any disc path when Thrown. Intercepts each roll 2 dice to bid against the total Throw count. Many Intercepts may roll against a single Throw, on it's dice path.
What is a Challenge?
In Huck + Monster, the Challenge is the defensive player adjacent to any Receiver as the Receiver comes into contact with an incoming game disc for a Catch.
Challenges each roll 2 dice to bid against the Receiver catch count. Challenges are not limited by the double team rule, and may "layer" defenders against the Receiver. Each Challenge adjacent to the Receiver may roll to bid against the Receiver's single catch count.
Defenders must be either a Mark, or a Challenge, to roll against a Receiver. Double teams are encouraged for defending against catches. There is no limit on the number of defenders that may compete for a Catch.

Business Inquiries
Can you print custom game boards for my team or league?
Due to the complexity, and level of effort involved in assembling game boards, we do not offer games at a discount, or in bulk at this time. We are in the process of testing our Limited Edition Gamekits, and are not yet in full production.
Get in contact for customized shirts, stickers, hats, or discs for your Ultimate organization.
Do you partner with Resellers?
Because we are in the early phases of research and development, Huck + Monster wants to ensure that retailers receive a fun, high-quality set of products, as approved by Ultimate players themselves.
By working primarily with Teams, Tournaments, and Leagues, Huck + Monster hopes to gather feedback, recommendations, and heckles, directly from the Ultimate community in order to continue to improve the experience of our products.
We would be happy to discuss partnering with your merch booth to act as a reseller, or discuss Huck + Monster products that may be right for your Disc Store.
Do you partner with Ultimate Teams?
Huck + Monster is always happy to support a scrappy, up-and-coming Ultimate Team.
However, due to the volume of Ultimate Teams that may be interested in sponsorship, or fundraising contribution, we are very selective on partnership teams.
Reach out to us on Instagram for additional details regarding team partnership opportunities, or social promotional suggestions. If you are a coordinator for an Ultimate program, please use the Organization Application on our Teams and Leagues page.
Do you partner with Ultimate Leagues?
We are currently planning 2023 partner programs with Ultimate Teams, Tournaments, and Leagues. Our partners receive custom gear, discounted merchandise, and special promotional items for their Ultimate organization.
Note: We offer partnerships to many different types of organizations, but we do not "Sponsor", as a rule. It is difficult to gauge the effectiveness of standard advertising, so we prefer to work with Ultimate organizations as advocates, rather than paying traditional advertising sponsorship fees.
Because we are a boutique niche product company. We're not interested in putting our name on your stuff, we're interested in the experience you have when having fun with our products.
We will spend many a late night helping create meaningful experiences with meaningful partners. If you're interested in Partnership, please let us know.

Extra Questions
Certain questions that are uncommon (or simply too weird for the main FAQ) are also helpful to our community. Please enjoy these team favorites received from across our social media accounts.
I lost one of my /game pieces/ Can you send me another one?
Checkout the backup game pieces in our Mini Kit section.
Don't see your missing piece listed?
This is a question that you should ask in the Community Forum, after you've signed up for our Sideline Team newsletter.
Wait a second, this isn't Ultimate...?
Correct. It isn't.
We encourage all types of Ultimate play, but we have chosen the tabletop, and sidelines, as our creative medium. We acknowledge, this isn't actually, like literally, totes, Ultimate.
We do offer quite a few things you may find helpfully fun, to keep in reserve for those (rare) occassions when the team doesn't quite make it to practice.
But yes, the gameplay for Huck + Monster is a little different. Mini folks have noted the difference.
{Boom. Handler joke when you least expect it. Stay frosty, Coach. You never know when you may find a secret play or two around the ol' Huck + Monster sidelines.}
Why do you hate grammar and spelling?
There are several reasons why we're combining the words "game" and "kit", or "play" and "maker", or "game" and "play".
Simply put, we are cheeky.
And although we're sure that it most certainly grinds the teeth of many a grammar enthusiast, we prefer the sentimentality of the misspelling. To Huck + Monster, "Gamekit", "Playmakers", and "Gameplay" are best used improperly, as proper nouns.
To save most people's sanity, (or perhaps to challenge it further) we've used the common, "auto-correct approved" versions for body text where we feel it's appropriate.
Yes, it is contradictory. No, we're not upset about it. We're game designers, folks, not writers.
This is dumb. I hate the game.
That isn't a question, but we'd be happy to address it.
From time to time, we all come across little parts of the world that we feel are "ours", or, more to the point, "mine". Examples could include: A certain special order at the coffee shop; A secret building entrance that no-one ever uses; A fun little sport that creates advocates, and fanatics, in equal measure.
We understand your point of view, and respect your decision. Ultimate is a uniquely empowering sport, and many people also believe it is "theirs". Which, is good...mostly.
We believe that Ultimate is for everyone. If our minor contribution to the game opens Ultimate up to new players, we feel that we've succeeded in our mission.
Why are all of your products so expensive?
Expense is relative, but we acknowledge that Huck + Monster does price higher than the standard cardboard board game.
This price point reflects what Huck + Monster considers to be a much higher quality, highly durable, boutique product. Our team prides itself on providing a Gamekit that should be considered more in-line with "Outdoor Gear" as a product category, than "Party Game".
We have taken great pains to reduce our costs as much as possible, given our small run, boutique production and assembly process. We will continue to find ways to save our Coaches on discounts, and shipping, in the future.
Gaming ain't easy, but Huck + Monster will continue to make a concerted effort to provide high-quality, sideline-ready, field-tested products, albeit at a slightly higher price point, that we feel represents the quality, and durability, of our Gamekits and Field Gear.
Special Note: It is our hope to offer "download and print" Huck + Monster game boards in the near future. We hope that this will allow players of all types to enjoy the game at their own price point, and interest level.
